Here at River we are a tight knit team that together make up our events based marketing agency in Manchester.

Our 20-strong team is packed with ambitious ambitious people working together to offer the services that go above and beyond our client's expectations, but what are the benefits to working in a start-up such as River?

Especially in today's job market, many jobseekers find themselves weighing up the pros and cons between joining a large corporation or an exciting new startup.

Ultimately, the main differences are the environment that each workplace produces and it comes down to what you, as the jobseeker and the individual, is looking to gain from a working environment.

Larger firms and corporations offer jobseekers that household name to add to their LinkedIn profile saying 'I work here' or that established brand that if you say you have worked with them, carries a certain prestige. The in-house training and recognition of course can hugely benefit anyone's career.

Generally speaking, startups offer fast-paced but collaborative work environment, environments where even the Managing Director is hands on in the day-to-day work or training of new starters.

You may have more responsibility with a startup, the team is smaller, your work contributes much more closely to the 'bigger goal' so it may be even more important to be self-motivated in your position within a startup as you are more accountable. It can also be said, the more time and effort you put in, the more you will get out of your role at a startup – the work you do is far more tangible.

At a large firm most entry-level jobs look pretty similar. There will be a manager who knows exactly what you’re working on, giving you predictable, often repetitive work—tasks that closely resemble the bullet points on the initial job description you applied for.

Conversely, at startups things change rapidly, and it’s a lot harder to know what’s coming your way! You'll embrace change, adapt and learn from new situations.

Do you prefer a role where two days are never the exact same? Do you enjoy and thrive of busy periods in a past role? These are things to think about!

Dealing with Senior Management

At a larger firm you could spend your whole career having never spoken to your CEO on a one-to-one basis. At a startup, that’s highly unlikely to be the case. Our Managing Director, for example, is visible on the front lines every day, conducting training to those in the entry level right through to the more senior positions. Our Managing Director will always be seen leading by example in order to really grow and build her startup in the best way possible.

Decide what you want to get out of a role, and where's the best place to learn the skills you desire?

Which environment would serve you well?
